Simple Read Later Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 26, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how the operator of "Read Later" (Japanese name: あとで読む; hereinafter referred to as "we", "us" or "our") handles user information in the iOS app "Read Later" (hereinafter the "App"). By using the App, you are deemed to have agreed to this Privacy Policy.

Note on language: This English version is provided for reference. The Japanese version of this Privacy Policy is the authoritative text. In case of any discrepancy between the Japanese and English versions, the Japanese version shall prevail.

1. Basic Policy

The App is built on the principle that the articles and reading history saved by users are never sent to our servers. User content is managed only on the user's own device (and within the user's own iCloud / cross-device sharing area, if applicable).

2. Information Stored On-Device

The App stores the following information on the user's device (within the App Group container) using SwiftData. This information is not transmitted to our servers.

  • URLs saved by the user
  • Text obtained via the share menu
  • Page titles and body text fetched from the saved URLs
  • Titles and summaries generated by the on-device AI
  • Save timestamps, read flags, favorite flags, and deletion flags
  • The host name and content type of the source (used for classifying the source)
  • App settings

  • This data is removed from the device when the user deletes it within the App or uninstalls the App.

    3. Web Page Fetching

When you save a URL, the App makes an HTTP request from your device directly to the target site to fetch the HTML, and extracts the title and body text. Our servers are not involved. The request headers include a User-Agent equivalent to that of iOS Safari, but do not contain any information that identifies the user.

    4. On-Device AI Summaries

The App uses Apple's Foundation Models framework (Apple Intelligence) to generate titles and summaries for saved content. All inference is performed locally on the user's device, and the input text and generated results are not transmitted to our servers or to Apple's servers (in accordance with Apple's on-device processing specifications).

The AI summary feature can be disabled from the settings screen. This feature is not available on devices that do not support Apple Intelligence.

    5. Third-Party Services We Use

The App uses the following third-party services to maintain quality and operations. Each service handles information in accordance with its own privacy policy.

5-1. Firebase Analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase)

    Provider: Google LLC

  • Information collected: Screen transitions, feature usage events (saving, favorite toggling, search, AI processing results, billing events, ad impressions/clicks, etc.), general device information (model, OS version, language, region), IDFV (a device identifier separate from the advertising ID), and approximate location information (country / region level derived from IP address).
  • Purpose: To understand feature usage, detect issues, improve quality, and optimize the billing and advertising flows.
  • What is transmitted: The content itself — the URLs of individual saved articles, body text, AI summaries, etc. — is not transmitted. Events include only an `item_id` derived from the save timestamp as an identifier.

  • 5-2. Firebase Remote Config

    Provider: Google LLC

  • Used to retrieve operational configuration values such as the URLs of the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and the on/off state of advertising. No individual user data is transmitted.

  • 5-3. Google AdMob

    Provider: Google LLC

  • Purpose: Banner ad delivery on the list and detail screens.
  • Information collected: IDFA (only when the user grants permission via App Tracking Transparency), IDFV, device information, ad interaction history, IP address, approximate location information, and ad measurement information via SKAdNetwork.
  • Tracking: If the user does not allow tracking, non-personalized ad requests (`npa=1`) are sent to Google and the IDFA is not used.
  • Ads are hidden under the Pro plan: While the user is subscribed to the Pro plan described below, ad slots are not displayed and no ad requests are made to AdMob.

  • 5-4. Apple App Store / StoreKit

    Provider: Apple Inc.

  • The purchase, restoration, and status verification of auto-renewing subscriptions are handled through Apple's systems (StoreKit / App Store). We do not receive any Apple Account (Apple ID) credentials or credit card information.

  • Privacy policies of each service

  • Google (Firebase / AdMob): https://policies.google.com/privacy
  • Apple: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

  • 6. App Tracking Transparency (ATT)

In accordance with iOS App Tracking Transparency, the App requests permission via the standard system dialog before using the IDFA. You can change the permission state at any time from "Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking" in iOS.

Ad requests to AdMob behave differently depending on the permission state:

  • Granted: Personalized ads may be served.
  • Denied / Not yet decided: Only non-personalized ads are served.

  • 7. Handling of Billing Information

The App offers an auto-renewing subscription (the "Pro plan") through Apple's StoreKit. All payment processing and subscription state management are handled by Apple. We do not receive credit card numbers or the email address of your Apple Account. We may obtain aggregate subscription information (such as counts of purchase, renewal, and cancellation events) via Firebase Analytics, but no personally identifiable information is included.

    8. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed primarily to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from users under the age of 13.

    9. Disclosure of Information

We will not disclose information obtained from users to third parties, except in the following cases:

  • When the user has consented;
  • When required by law;
  • When necessary to protect the life, body, or property of a person and obtaining the user's consent is difficult;
  • When it is necessary to cooperate with a national or local government agency, or a person entrusted by such an agency, in carrying out duties prescribed by law.

  • 10. User Rights

Users can delete their saved data at any time through in-app actions (deletion, permanent removal from the trash, or uninstalling the App). The scope of analytics data used by Firebase Analytics depends on the user's choices in "Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising" in iOS and in the in-app ATT dialog. If you wish to request deletion or otherwise contact us, please use the contact information below.

    11. Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be revised in response to changes in laws and regulations or to changes in the App's features. We will provide notice of material changes within the App or on a support page.
